Giáo Phận Orange có tân Giám Mục Phụ Tá
ORANGE COUNTY, California (NV) – Ðức Giáo Hoàng Francis vừa bổ nhiệm Linh Mục Timothy Freyer làm giám mục phụ tá Giáo Phận Orange, theo thông cáo của văn phòng báo chí Vatican, hôm 23 Tháng Mười Một.
Tân giám mục phụ tá sẽ hỗ trợ Giám Mục Kevin Vann, giám mục Giáo Phận Orange, quản trị một giáo phận có hơn 1.3 triệu giáo dân, với nhiều sắc dân khác nhau, và được xem là một trong những nơi có sự đa dạng sắc tộc nhất và đông giáo dân nhất Hoa Kỳ.
Lễ tấn phong giám mục cho Linh Mục Timothy Freyer sẽ diễn ra vào ngày 17 Tháng Giêng, 2017.
“Tôi cảm thấy rất vui và vinh dự khi được bổ nhiệm vào chức này,” vị tân giám mục phụ tá được trích lời nói. “Tôi biết ơn Ðức Giáo Hoàng và Giám Mục Kevin Vann đã luôn tin tưởng và ủng hộ tôi trong suốt thời gian qua. Ngoài ra, tôi cũng rất biết ơn Giám Mục Tod Brown và Giám Mục Mai Thanh Lương, vì tình bạn và tình cảm của họ dành cho tôi.”
Giám Mục Tod Brown và Giám Mục Mai Thanh Lương hiện nghỉ hưu trong giáo phận.
Với vai trò mới này, Giám Mục Freyer sẽ hỗ trợ Giám Mục Kevin Vann trong việc tiếp tục phát triển các kế hoạch mục vụ mới của giáo phận. Ðồng thời, vị tân giám mục phụ tá sẽ tiếp tục công việc truyền giáo và tổ chức các hoạt động để đem mọi người đến gần với Chúa Kitô hơn, theo thông báo của Giáo Phận Orange.
“Khi tôi chuyển về Giáo Phận Orange, Linh Mục Freyer trở thành người bạn tốt của tôi và là một cộng tác viên tuyệt vời, và là ơn phước của Bề Trên dành cho tôi và mọi dân Chúa trong giáo phận,” Giám Mục Kevin Vann được trích lời nhận xét về vị tân giám mục phụ tá. “Lòng nhiệt thành và tình yêu của linh mục đối với sự nghiệp phục vụ giáo dân chắc chắn cũng giống như tôi khi tôi bắt đầu con đường phục vụ.”
Vị chủ chăn của Giáo Phận Orange cho biết thêm: “Tân Giám Mục Freyer sẽ kế thừa công việc của cựu giám mục phụ tá, và sẽ là người bạn tuyệt vời của tất cả mọi người, đồng thời giúp tôi và các nhân viên kết nối tất cả mọi người trong giáo phận trong tình thương của Chúa. Kinh nghiệm của ngài trong nhiều năm qua tại các giáo xứ, đặc biệt là ở cộng đồng gốc Hispanic sẽ là món quà lớn cho giáo phận.”
Tân Giám Mục Timothy Freyer sinh ra ở Los Angeles và lớn lên ở Hungtinton Beach, nơi cách nhà thờ chánh tòa Christ Cathedral ở Garden Grove không bao xa.
Sau khi tốt nghiệp trung học tại trường trung học Hungtinton Beach, vị giám mục tương lai vào học trường đại học của nhà dòng St. John’s ở Camarillo, California, và lấy bằng cử nhân thần học.
Tân Giám Mục Freyer thụ phong linh mục ngày 10 Tháng Sáu, 1989 và bắt đầu công việc mục vụ tại nhà thờ St. Hedwig ở Los Alamitos của Giáo Phận Orange County trong năm năm, trước khi được bổ nhiệm về nhà thờ Our Lady of Fatima ở San Clemente. Năm năm sau, ông được chuyển về nhà thờ St. Catherine of Siena ở Laguna Beach, và ở đây hai năm.

Tân Giám Mục Phụ Tá Timothy Freyer là một trong những sáng lập viên của trung tâm Anaheim Family Justice Center, nơi giúp đỡ những nạn nhân bạo lực gia đình. Ông cũng phục vụ hai nhiệm kỳ trong hội đồng quản trị trung tâm y tế St. Jude ở Fullerton. Ngoài ra, ông cũng là linh mục tuyên úy cho Sở Cảnh Sát Anaheim.
Giám Mục Freyer là người con duy nhất của ông bà Jerry và Patricia Freyer. Cha của ông mất năm 1977. Hiện mẹ của ông đang sinh sống tại Hungtinton Beach. (N.A.)

HOLY SEE APPOINTS AUXILIARY BISHOP FOR DIOCESE OF ORANGE
Bishop-elect Timothy Freyer will support Bishop Kevin Vann in caring for the needs of this vibrant and growing Diocese
Today the Press Office of the Holy See announced that Bishop-elect Timothy Freyer, current Vicar for Priests in the Diocese of Orange, has been appointed by Pope Francis as Auxiliary Bishop for the Diocese of Orange, assisting Bishop Kevin Vann. The date of his episcopal ordination will be Jan. 17, 2017.
“I am both humbled and honored to accept this appointment,” said Bishop-elect Freyer. “I am grateful to Pope Francis and to Bishop Vann for their trust and confidence in me and I pray that I may live up to their expectations. In addition to my gratitude to the Holy Father and Bishop Vann, I am also grateful to Bishops Brown and Luong for their friendship and affection over these past years.”
In his new role, Bishop-elect Freyer says he will assist Bishop Vann in any way he can, including continuing to develop the diocese’s new pastoral plan. He will also continue to focus on evangelization, including creating experiences, ministries and structures that will bring people closer to Christ.
“We are blessed as Diocese to continue to benefit from kind and humble leadership offered by Bishop-elect Freyer, as a priest, and now a Bishop,” said Bishop Vann. “Bishop-elect Freyer’s deep love of God is evident in every encounter shared and he always seeks to show the merciful and inspiring face of Christ to those facing their darkest days. I am truly blessed to work with Bishop-elect Freyer in the garden of the Lord.”
Bishop-elect Freyer’s roots are in Southern California. He was born in L.A. and grew up in Huntington Beach, a short drive from Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove, where he will serve in his new role as Auxiliary Bishop.
After graduating from Huntington Beach High School he entered the St. John’s Seminary College in Camarillo, CA where he earned his bachelor’s degree, followed by four years at St. John’s Seminary where, as a graduate student, he studied Theology.
Bishop-elect Freyer was ordained a priest on June 10, 1989 and his first assignment was as associate pastor at St. Hedwig Church in Los Alamitos, within the Diocese of Orange. He served in that role for five years before being assigned to Our Lady of Fatima Church in San Clemente. Five years later, he moved to St. Catherine of Siena Church in Laguna Beach where he remained for two years.
In 2001, Bishop-elect Freyer was appointed pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Fullerton, and then in 2003 was reassigned as pastor for St. Boniface Church in Anaheim.
He was named Episcopal Vicar for Priests in 2012, with responsibility for the care and ongoing formation of the priests of the Diocese of Orange. Additionally, he was named the first bishop’s liaison to the Jovenes para Cristo (Young Adults for Christ) movement from 1998-2004, helping them to write their statutes and revise their plan of formation as well as assisting them as they opened chapters in California, Texas and Oregon.
Bishop-elect Freyer served as one of the founding board members of the Anaheim Family Justice Center (now called the Orange County Family Justice Center) that assists victims of domestic violence. He served two terms as a member of the board of trustees for St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton and continues to serve on the Community Benefits Committee that oversees the Medical Center’s care-for-the-poor programs. He is currently a police chaplain for the Anaheim Police Department.
Bishop-elect Freyer is the only child of Jerry and Patricia Freyer. His father died in 1977 and his mother currently resides in Huntington Beach.
